Ottomans in Vienna: The Narratives of Travelers, Envoys and Captives

The history of comings and goings for a variety of reasons such as travel, business, migration, taking refuge etc. between Turkey and Vienna go back a long time. The footsteps of the background of these sojourns and compulsory accommodations can be traced with intermediacy of some still existing documents and narrations. Accordingly, the aim of this survey is to sketch a backdrop for the present-day “otherness” question through the experiences of four different Ottoman individuals, namely, Evliya Çelebi, Temeşvarlı Osman Ağa, Zülfikar Paşa and Ebubekir Ratib Efendi.
